Bus Drivers Blog

Bus Drivers Blog

I am working as a bus driver this summer and I want to post news and photos from my driving around Iceland with tourists.

My second round trip started on june 27.  Five of the passagers were british and three from USA.  Guide – Steffie.

First stop by lake Thingvallavatn, then on to Golden Waterfalls and Geysir the hotspring. We also saw FAXI with the salmon ladder.
By Seljalandsfoss we saw a few people flying these kites.
Must be fun !
You can hardly see who’s flying.
At the Hotel Edda at Skogar this young woman told me she was my daugther-in-laws’ cousin.
Midnightsun at Skogar, Iceland.
I like this bus and I think the colour especially nice.

DAY 2:

After we had taken a walk through the Folk museum at Skogar we headed east. And the first stop was on the southmost spot of Iceland – Dyrholaey

Steffie and a nice bus driver we met at Dyrholaey.
Wonderful sight to the Black beach and Reynisdrangar out at sea.
The people in my group managed to see puffins in the cliffs.
Our bus is a tiny one 🙂
If Iceland would rise more these would be mountains!
WHAT ????
Yes …. it’s really a guy with santa’s hat washing his jeep.
Just after passing VIK we took a turn to the left and drove for 15 kilometers. On the way we saw the glacier Myrdalsjokull.
Finally we came to this beautiful place: ÞAKGIL
The camping place is surrounded by mountains so there is almost always calm wind there and very nice.
The bus driver in her new uniform to match the colour of the bus. But ….. what about the sneakers ??? they do not fit !!!
On the way back
These are ruins from shelters for sheep. Used when men go up to collect the sheep in autumn to keep them while looking for more sheep.
Just before Kirkjubaejarklaustur the group left the bus for a little walk in the lava field from 1783 that came from Laki.
But Steffie decided to make one more stop and a walk along a beautiful canyon. See the funny face in the mirror there?
And so off they went.
And the bus had to move to another spot to get them.
Funny clouds in the sky – green grass – and a huge lava field below.
If you can read icelandic ….
This photo is from a sign by the car park and is taken from an airplain.
Bus driver’s selfie just to prove that sometimes she goes out of the bus.

Funny clouds.
At the Icelandair hotel in Kirkjubæjarklaustur a friend of my daughter was the waitress.

Day 3

In Iceland you can’t count on sunshine and for us we had quite enough of rain. On this day we drove to Skaftafell for a long walk on the mountain in the woods and towards the glacer.

Day 4

We made a stop at Hofn to look at a museum of fishing and fishers. But we also visited a very nice café for lunch.

From inside the bathroom at the café.
After a short stop at Djupivogur we headed for a mountain road to take us over to the east of Iceland.
This is from a spot on our way up to the top, looking back down the valley.
I had fun driving on this road …. I don’t know about the passangers ??
In Egilsstadir we went to the supermaked but then to our hotel which is called Eyjolfsstadir. Steffie met an old friend who was working at the hotel. Beautiful women both of them.

Day 5

Leaving Egilsstadir we stopped for a view of Dyrfjoll – those with the snow on top.
Hard wind !
Everyone out for a photostop.
Some days we saw many waterfalls – some days few but always at least one. This one is called Rjukandi.
Here we are for a photo stop on the highest part of our trip. The road is at 615 meters above sea level.
We made a stop at Dettifoss but this photo is from Selfoss a little bit up river from the other one.
There was a lot of water in the river and the weather was a bit in a hurry so we were all sand polished.
This is what the river looks like running down. This is a glacier river as the colour shows.
In this part of Iceland the vegetation has a hard time growing. Winters are long and hard and in the summer there are strong winds.
This is a typical sandstorm in the north. We are on our way back from Dettifoss on to the ringroad.
Photo from inside the bus at Krafla the power station.
From inside the tourist information at Myvatn.

At the end of the day we came to Hotel Narfastadir in Reykjadalur. A very nice country hotel and at dinner time we had buffet with many fish dishes and also two kinds of meat and some desert dishes as well.

Day 6

The group is doing a walk at Myvatn, starting by climbing mount Hverfjall and then hiking from there in to Dimmuborgir, the Lava field with strange formations.

Our bus is the little one – it seems unbelievable small compared to the one beside it which fits 70 people.
After the long walk, one lady was fit to take a two hours’ riding tour, while the others went to the Nature Baths.

Day 7

We leave the hotel and drive to Godafoss – the waterfall of the Gods.  Near by there is a small beautiful church – the only church in Iceland with windows in stead of a painting above or behind the altar.

The group got a small church concert at this church Þorgeirskirkja, named after the man who decided that the nation should be christian in the year 1000.
We are in Akureyri and the group has done a hike through the botanic gardens and here we are in the center of town. At this place tonight there is a concert with the band Hjalmar in which the bus drivers’ son is one of the members. His name is Sigurdur Gudmundsson.
But we had to leave Akureyri and here we are at Glaumbær in Skagafjordur, having the after noon tea.
I’m not sure of the names of my group members’ so it’s better not to try remembering. These two gent’s were happy I think.
The two ladies to the left are from the US and also the man in the center.
She looks very happy and relaxed.

Our last night before Reykjavik we spent at Edda Hotel at Laugarbakki.  I will never understand why we had to stay there and not just drive all the way to the capital. That way the group had a whole day in Reykjavik before departure.

Day 8

We drove from Laugarbakki to Reykjavik, only stopping in Borgarnes for a little while. In Reykjavik we went to the Perlan, couldn’t go in Hallgrimskirkja because there was a concert, drove to the lake in center, passed the city hall, the harbour and Harpa the concert hall. Then to Höfði, where Reagan and Gorbasjov held their meeting.

Day 9

Departure from Hotel Cabin at 12.30. Some had either already left or were staying one more night but those who were there took the bus to Leifsstöð in Keflavik airport.  On the way we drove through Hafnarfjodur to see the way people take the lava as a friend and has it as a part of the gardens around their houses.

–  O  –  O  –  O  –  O  –  O  –  O – O – O – O – O – O – O – O – O – O – O – O – O –

On june 11 I started a 13 day tour around the island. Day 1 – The Golden Circle and to Hellisholar, Fljotshlid.

Almannagja, Thingvellir

Day 2

The group went to the Westmann Islands and I drove around for a bit and waited.

This is a typical icelandic farm church

You can see the islands in the background.

Not so many years ago houses like this one were built in many places around Iceland. They were supposed to be used for comunity festivals and sometimes there were classical conserts in some of them.  But lately men think money should be spent otherwise and now those houses stand empty almost every day of the year and some of them are looking really bad.

The Helicopter from the coast guard

This weekend rescue teams were looking for two young women that had been missing for a few days. Their clothes had been found near a waterfall in a canyon.  One of them was found that weekend, but the other one a month later. Both had drowned.

There is nothing like a summer night i Iceland.

Day 3

We drive from the hotel at 8.30 to be at Skogar at 9.00 for a guided tour.

Turf houses in Skogar museum.

The tour has begun and my friend Smari Olason knows a lot about all these old things. He even sang a hymn from the 15th century.  IMG_0017

He really enjoys his work.

The museum owns a few houses from different times.

This is the church and of course the bus driver was there playing for the group when they walked into the house of God.

IMG_0023 IMG_0024

One of the ladies in our group is inside a house where they kept stuff they needed for working the land.

Everything is small and narrow here.

IMG_0031 IMG_0032

This house used to be a school.

People at Skogarfoss

I saw a white spot high in the cliffs above the farm and was sure it was a sheep that was stuck. I don’t know if I was right, but I asked someone to phone the farmer and tell him.
